What You Will Be Doing as the Mechanical Design Engineer:

The Mechanical Design Engineer brings creative innovation to the concept and design of new product development and improves the performance and design of existing products. This involves collaborating with the R&D engineering team and working closely with other cross-functional teams to bring innovative products from concept to production. They will ensure designs meet performance, cost, and manufacturability requirements in creating World Class Professional Lighting products.

 

  • Lead development of projects based on specifications and management decisions.
  • Develop, own complex mechanical designs from concept to commercialization. 
  • Prepare strategy, concept, and design, as well as production drawings and calculations to ensure that designs meet specification requirements and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Prepare large assemblies of complex products and ability to make quick changes following design intent.
  • Formulate and implement improvements to existing products in a continuous improvement environment.
  • Prepare 3D, CAD drawings and layouts using SolidWorks (i.e. reflectors, extrusions, molded parts, non-imaging lenses, harnesses, PCB connections, layouts, production fixtures, jigs, etc.)
  • Ensure that design implementation, test, and maintenance methods/processes are developed and executed in a manner that supports company quality and safety standards.
  • Conduct material selection processes to balance cost, performance, and sustainability, employing advanced materials technology when beneficial.
  • Conduct design reviews.
  • Assist with the preparation of proposals and technical data files.
  • Improve ease of assembly and expand product options for production.
  • Build prototypes and participate in detailed new product qualification testing plan.
  • Prepare, source, investigate and resolve bill of material (BOM) issues and engineering change requests (ECRs).
  • Maintain thorough documentation for all aspects of assigned projects.
  • Act as a liaison between manufacturing, engineering, and procurement teams to provide cost-effective solutions to design challenges.
  • Apply a wide variety of established or modified engineering methods or techniques with considerable independence of action.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians, providing guidance and support to develop their technical skills and professional capabilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What you need:

  • Post-secondary degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited University (or equivalent work experience).
  • Minimum of 8 years of working experience in Mechanical Design, ideally in an R&D engineering environment
  • Knowledge of IP (Ingress protection) product design.
  • Hands-on experience with engineering metrology and measurement devices.
  • Experience with thermal management of products (Heat sink, heat exchanger)
  • Proficient with SolidWorks CAD/CAE software to produce advanced engineering modeling.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret documents such as specifications (read electrical and mechanical drawings, jig or blueprint, procedure manuals, safety rules, and operating and maintenance instructions)
  • Sound knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Knowledge of basic manufacturing methods for manufacturing, castings, extrusions, and other fabrication methods (e.g. plastics molding)
  • Professional communications (verbal and written) with both internal/external and technical/non-technical personnel.

Nice to have

  • Industrial Design experience is an asset
  • Experience with LED products and professional lighting fixture design
  • Knowledge and experience of non-imaging optic design
  • Knowledge of optical component manufacturing processes
  • Experience working in a machine shop.
  • Ability to create/design optical systems to meet customer requirements by working directly with external and internal clients
