Electronics Design Engineer

Overview

The Electronics Design Engineer is responsible for the research and development of conceptual ideas, architectures and processes for new products; improving the performance and design of existing products and developing and optimizing the manufacturing programming and test processes of products.    

The Electronics Design Engineer plays an integral role from brainstorming and prototype development to series production launch and beyond, including: 

  • Working within the R&D engineering team from prototypes development to series production launch.  
  •  Participate in brainstorming sessions to conceptualize new products.   
  • Development of new products combining mechanical, electrical and optical systems.  
  • Development of system level architecture, specifications, and schematics.  
  • Schematic design, PCB layout design, and generation and maintenance of corporate component libraries.  
  • Assembly, test and debugging of prototypes and pre-production prototypes to validate designs for performance, reliability and conformity to applicable standards.
  • Generating BOM’s and associated manufacturing drawings and documentation for PCBA’s. 
  • Follow-up with PCB supplier for PCB build. 
  • Testing and qualification of new technologies and components including development of proof-of-concept designs.   
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, offering suggestions for product design modifications and component substitutions.  
  • Completing tasks in creative and effective ways, with minimal guidance and oversight, and reporting about their completion.
  • Performing new product pre-qualification testing and assisting in EMC/EMI and safety testing compliance according to performance and quality specifications.  
  • Producing and maintaining accurate documentation according to company standards.  
  • Ensuring that designs meet quality and regulatory standards (IPC, FCC, IC, CE, etc.).  
  • Developing embedded firmware for test and prototype designs.
  • Participate in design handover from engineering to production including providing training to plant staff and maintaining assembly documentation.  
  • Sourcing and quoting of components and assemblies; working with vendors (domestic and international).
  • Managing relationships with external suppliers of custom manufactured goods including cost negotiating and quality management.
  • Programming for production programming and Automatic Testing Equipment (ATE).  
  • Additional hours may be required for Tradeshows, Professional Development, or other such peak periods and/or events.  

What we’re looking for:

  • Post-secondary degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited University (or equivalent work experience).  
  • 3-5+ years of working experience.in Electronics Design.  
  • Proficient with EDA tools such as Altium Designer, OrCAD, LT Spice, etc.  
  • Ability to effectively plan and organize projects and manage priorities with attention to detail.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills.  
  • Experience with analog and digital devices.
  • Ability to understand complex mathematical relationships that underpin electrical analysis.  
  • Ability to read, interpret, and develop electrical schematics and embedded code (C, C++).  
  • Communication and organizational skills.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).  

Preferred Skills

  • Some experience with mechanical CAD (i.e. SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Draftsight). 
  • Experience with LabVIEW

Working Conditions

  • Usually works in a lab or plant/warehouse environment, but the mission of the organization may sometimes take them to non-standard workplaces.
  • Standard work week, but additionally will often work overtime hours to accommodate activities
